History

Saugatuck Nursery School is a nonprofit school that was founded in 1968. It has evolved from the inspiration of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s vision of racial peace to encompass the many needs of today's changing families:
  • single parents
  • two-career families
  • parenting skills
  • stress reduction
  • financial needs
  • children's special needs
  • enjoyment of life
Approximately 50 children, ages 3-5 attend various facets of the morning or afternoon nursery school, the extended day care, and the after school care.. The year round, all day school (8:OOa.m - 6:00 p.m.) is a non-denominational, culturally diverse school, where social skills are learned in a happy, safe environment, and children are enriched by nurturing, professional teachers.
SNS has a long-standing reputation of lovingly providing for each child's needs and gifts. Each program encourages the children to develop life skills, including language, reasoning ability, problem solving, and conflict resolution.
The many varied activities are designed to stimulate thinking, creativity, and curiosity. Open-ended questions encourage thinking and save risk taking. The development of imagination is more important than the "right" answer.
Art is for the experience, not the product. Children are encouraged to enjoy the texture, color, and experimentation.
Building is mainly for the experience, not the structure. The act of cooperative building is more valuable than the finished project.
A sense of self worth is infinitely more important than labeling and categorizing.
